175,000-square-foot facility will feature pools, gyms, fitness spaces, arts areas and a new 40,000-square-foot library
SURREY, B.C. (Khandoli) — Construction is now underway on the new Newton Community Centre, a major $310.6-million project that the City of Surrey says will help transform the Newton town centre.
According to a City of Surrey media release dated September 15, 2026, work at the site is progressing, with crews removing decommissioned infrastructure, carrying out site grading and conducting additional geotechnical testing.
The new facility will cover approximately 175,000 square feet and is planned as a major community hub bringing recreation, culture and library services together under one roof.
The centre will include a 50-metre lap pool, leisure pool, hot tub and sauna, along with two gymnasiums and a fitness centre. The facility will also feature multi-purpose and arts spaces, child-care areas and a new 40,000-square-foot library, which will be more than twice the size of the existing Newton branch.
Mayor Brenda Locke described the project as a “gamechanger for Newton,” saying the community deserves a facility that reflects its size, diversity and potential.
The start of construction follows the completion of the new Newton Community Centre road. The new road is designed to improve access to the future recreation centre for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers travelling from King George Boulevard. The City says the road is scheduled to open in the coming weeks.
The community centre will be located on the east side of King George Boulevard, next to the Newton Seniors Centre.
The City says the project is part of its long-term vision for a revitalized Newton town centre. Construction is expected to continue toward an anticipated opening in spring 2030.
The project represents a significant investment in recreation, community services, fitness, culture and library infrastructure for one of Surrey’s largest and most diverse communities.
