Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke recognizes the first Canadian Punjabi climber to summit Mount Everest and survive a near-fatal descent.

Surrey, B.C. — A proud and historic moment was witnessed at Surrey City Hall as Surrey-based Canadian Punjabi climber Ajaypal Singh Dhaliwal was specially recognized by Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke and members of Surrey City Council for his remarkable achievement of summiting Mount Everest.

Ajaypal Singh Dhaliwal has become the first Canadian Punjabi climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak. He successfully reached the 8,848.86-metre summit on May 20, during one of the busiest and most challenging climbing windows of the season.

His achievement became even more inspiring as he survived a near-fatal descent from the mountain. Despite extreme conditions and serious challenges during the return journey, Dhaliwal showed courage, determination, and strength, making his safe return a proud moment for the entire community.

The special recognition ceremony at Surrey City Hall was attended by a large gathering from the Punjabi community. Mayor Brenda Locke praised Ajaypal Singh Dhaliwal for his courage, dedication, and historic accomplishment, stating that his achievement has brought pride not only to Surrey but also to the wider Canadian Punjabi community.

Several respected community members and leaders were present on this special occasion, including Harmeet Singh Khuddian, Bakhshish Singh Jeera, Baljinder Singh Sangha, Lali Sidhu, Avtar Singh Gill, Kartar Singh Dhillon, Harry Kooner, Dhaliwal, Manjit Singh Mangat, Maheshinder Singh Mangat, Aman Brar, and many others.

Speaking on the occasion, community members said that Ajaypal Singh Dhaliwal’s success is a powerful example of hard work, discipline, and determination. His journey to the top of the world is an inspiration for young people, especially within the Punjabi community, to dream big and never give up in the face of challenges.

The event also highlighted the strong presence and contribution of the Punjabi community in Surrey. The large turnout at City Hall reflected the community’s pride and support for Dhaliwal’s extraordinary milestone.
