Reports of a potential invitation to India’s 2027 national celebrations come as Ottawa and New Delhi pursue a year-end trade agreement and closer diplomatic cooperation.
OTTAWA / NEW DELHI — GKM MEDIA NEWS
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney could be considered for a prominent diplomatic role at India’s Republic Day celebrations next January, as the two governments continue efforts to rebuild relations and expand economic cooperation.
A report published by the Hindustan Times on October 8, citing people familiar with the matter, indicates that India is exploring the possibility of inviting Carney as chief guest for the January 26, 2027, celebrations.
The proposal is reportedly at an early stage. Neither government has publicly confirmed a formal invitation or Carney’s attendance.
Trade Agreement Remains a Central Priority
The potential diplomatic engagement comes during negotiations for a Canada–India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Both governments have set a target of concluding negotiations by the end of 2026, although an agreement has not yet been finalized.
Four rounds of CEPA negotiations had concluded and a fifth was underway in Ottawa, according to the Hindustan Times report. Global Affairs Canada reported that two-way trade in goods and services reached $30.4 billion in 2025.
Canada is seeking to expand commercial opportunities in sectors including energy, agriculture, critical minerals and advanced technology.
A New Phase in Bilateral Relations
Relations between Canada and India faced significant diplomatic tensions during former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s administration, including disagreements over security-related allegations.
Since Carney took office, the two governments have resumed high-level engagement.
Carney travelled to India earlier this year, meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an official visit from February 27 to March 2. The leaders subsequently met again on the sidelines of the G7 summit in June.
Their discussions have focused on economic cooperation, trade diversification and rebuilding government-to-government communication.
Further High-Level Visits Under Consideration
The same media report suggests Modi may travel to Canada in December 2026. While Carney has previously extended an invitation to the Indian leader, the reported December schedule has not been formally confirmed.
Security cooperation also remains part of the bilateral agenda, with discussions addressing terrorism, organized crime and extradition-related issues.
Whether Carney receives an official Republic Day invitation may become clearer as trade negotiations and diplomatic consultations progress.
For now, the proposed visit remains a reported possibility rather than a confirmed engagement.
