A major multi-vehicle collision on Highway 99 in Surrey on Friday afternoon sent 13 people to hospital, including two with serious but stable injuries, according to a news release issued by Surrey Police Service (SPS).

The collision occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on October 16, 2026, in the 12200-block of Highway 99.

Police say a semi-truck and trailer travelling northbound struck three sedans moving in the same direction. The truck subsequently left the northbound lanes, jackknifed and collided with the median separating northbound and southbound traffic.

The semi-truck then entered the southbound lanes, striking a transit bus carrying approximately 50 to 60 passengers and another sedan.

Thirteen People Taken to Hospital

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) paramedics provided emergency medical care to 13 people following the collision.

Two patients were transported to hospital in serious but stable condition. One of those patients was airlifted to hospital and has since been discharged, police confirmed.

Eleven additional patients were transported to hospital in stable condition with less serious injuries.

Authorities have not provided further details about the identities of those injured.

Major Emergency Response Across Surrey

The scale of the collision prompted a significant emergency response involving multiple agencies.

Surrey Police Service officers from across the city attended the scene alongside Surrey Fire Services firefighters.

BCEHS deployed numerous emergency medical resources, including an air ambulance.

With the collision affecting multiple lanes and causing substantial traffic congestion, officers from the Delta Police Department also assisted.

City of Surrey personnel, Mainroad traffic crews and staff from the Ministry of Transportation and Transit provided additional support over several hours.

Cause of Collision Remains Under Investigation

The SPS Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene and is leading the investigation.

Police emphasized that the cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

Investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the initial collision, the truck’s movement across the highway and the subsequent impacts involving the transit bus and other vehicles.

No determination of fault or cause was announced in the October 17 police release.

Police Appeal for Dashcam Footage and Witnesses

SPS is urging motorists, passengers and witnesses who may have recorded the collision to share their footage directly with investigators.

Police say they are aware that several motorists and passengers have already provided dashcam videos to local media outlets or posted footage on social media.

However, investigators are asking anyone with relevant footage to submit it to SPS so that it can be considered as part of the official investigation.

People who witnessed the crash and have not yet spoken with police are also encouraged to come forward.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to contact Surrey Police Service at 604-599-0502 and quote police file 26-111726 (SP).

The investigation remains ongoing.
