Editorial Policy
Our newsroom standards
GKM News covers community life in British Columbia and Canada, with reporting from Punjab, India and other places connected to our readers. Our work appears in English, Punjabi and Hindi. This policy explains the standards we expect across news, features, interviews, video and social publishing.
Accuracy, sources and context
We check material facts against reliable sources, including primary records and first-hand accounts where available. We attribute claims to the people or organizations making them, distinguish confirmed information from allegation or opinion, and add context that helps readers understand what is known and what remains uncertain. When a report concerns serious allegations, we seek a response from the person or organization affected when it is practical and safe to do so. Developing stories may be updated as verified information changes; material changes should be explained to readers.
Fairness, language and visuals
Headlines should accurately represent the story beneath them. We take care with names, translations, cultural context and terminology across English, Punjabi and Hindi. Quotes should keep their intended meaning when translated. We use photographs, video and other material only when GKM has the right to use them or a clear editorial basis to publish them, and we identify sources or supplied images when that information is available. We avoid captions that imply more than an image can establish.
Editorial independence and paid content
Advertising, sponsorship and paid placements must be distinguishable from independent reporting. Commercial partners do not receive an editorial guarantee or control over news decisions. Content made for a client or sponsor should be identified clearly so readers can tell who commissioned it. Staff and contributors should raise a personal, financial or family connection that could reasonably affect a story before publication, so an editor can decide how to manage it.
Bylines, sources and accountability
We credit an individual author when a report has an identified contributor and a byline is appropriate. Where a story is published under the newsroom’s name, the collective byline should not be read as a claim that one named reporter wrote it. Confidential sources are considered case by case; we do not promise anonymity automatically, and editors should understand the reason for protecting a source before agreeing to it. Readers can report a possible factual error through our Correction Policy or send an enquiry through Contact GKM News.
